Assam Sports Journalists’ Association holds Annual General Meeting; new Executive Committee formed

Guwahati; 28th Jan 2024: The Annual General Meeting of Assam Sports Journalists’ Association (ASJA) was held at Landmark Hotel in Guwahati on Sunday.

The meeting was presided over by President Shri Subodh Malla Barua, General Secretary Md Imtiaz Ahmed placed the minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting and the Secretary’s Report on behalf of the Executive Committee. Both were passed unanimously.

The Executive Committee of the Assam Sports Journalists’ Association was also reconstituted in compliance with the Constitution of the Assam Sports Journalists’ Association. In the election which was uncontested in all the posts, 25 office bearers were declared elected by Election Officers Shri Sanjib Kumar Phukan and Shri Santanu Kumar Das. The newly formed Executive Committee includes:

Vice Presidents: Rajkumar Sharma (Dainik Purvoday), Mrinal Borah (Pratidin Time), Mridumoloy Lukhurakhan (The Assam Tribune), Saurav Kr Borah (Amar Asom), Kulapradip Bhagawati (Dainik Agradoot), Dwijendralal Das (Prantajyoti).
General Secretary: Imtiaz Ahmed (Awaz — The Voice)
Joint Secretaries: Tauhid Ali Talukdar (Asomiya Pratidin), Dhiren Sarma (Dainik Asom), Kausav Baruah (The Assam Tribune)
Assistant Secretaries: Samarendra Sarma (The Assam Tribune), Bhupender Singh (Pratah Khabar), Prarthana Hazarika (The Sentinel)

The term of the new committee will be for three years from 2024 to 2027. The outgoing committee effected changes to the constitution by creating two new posts of Working President and Chairman in 2023.

Outgoing President Shri Subodh Malla Barua was unanimously offered the position of Chairman of the Assam Sports Journalists’ Association. The AGM also saw discussions on several key issues, with ASJA advisors Shri Balendra Mohan Chakravarty and Shri Pabitra Gogoi in attendance. The AGM discussed hosting the annual events such as the ASJA Sports Awards, ASJA Inter-Media T20 Cricket Championship, ASJA Sports Festival, ASJA Inter-School/Coaching Centre Cricket Championships.

The meeting also resolved to move the Govt of Assam to resume the pension for journalists, being suspended since last year, and to get sports journalists honoured with government recognitions for their lifetime contributions. Further the AGM proposed to document the sporting history of Assam with inputs from veteran sports journalists so that it can be archived for posterity.

The AGM also appointed the advisors and special invitees for the term 2024-27. Shri Premadhar Sarma, Shri Balendra Mohan Charavarty, Shri Pabitra Gogoi, Shri Umanand Jaiswal, Shri Diganta Buragohain and Shri Sambhu Majumdar were unanimously adopted as advisors, while Shri Kaustav Moni Kakati, Shri Rajdeep Das, Md Abdul Gani, Shri Santosh Agarwal and Shri Mukut Sarma were adopted as Special Invitees. The Executive Committee was also empowered to co-opt other members and representatives from affiliated units as members to the Executive Committee in future in compliance with constitutional provisions.
