LAUSANNE, July 1, 2020: It is just a few hours away from the 1st AIPS e-Conference, that will go online on July 2. The event, which celebrates the World Sports Journalists Day and the 96th anniversary of the founding of AIPS, will bring together journalists from all over the world and a prestigious group of panelists from all continents, who will share significant perspectives regarding the challenges that the sports media culture is called to face in this time of change. To date, over 686 journalists from 137 countries have already confirmed their participation.
THE PANEL The international panel titled “Has Covid-19 affected journalists’ independence and future?” will bring together some of the most influential voices in the sports media sector. Also the European publishing behemoths La Gazzetta dello Sport, L’Équipe and Marca acccepted AIPS’ invitation to the event. Their Editors in Chief, respectively Stefano Barigelli, Jérôme Cazadieu and Juan Ignacio Gallardo, will therefore share the virtual stage with colleagues from all continents, for the largest sports press conferece in the post-COVID world.
STEFANO BARIGELLI (Italy) Graduated in modern history, he is a journalist since 1986. Fistly employed in Paese Sera, he moved to the Messaggero in 1989, becoming Head of Sports Services in 1995. In 2000, he moved to Corriere della Sera with a similar role. In 2002, Barigelli became deputy Editor of the Gazzetta dello Sport, while in 2003 he held the same role for the Messaggero. In 2013, he was Co-Editor of the Corriere dello Sport. He returned to the Gazzetta dello Sport in 2018 as deputy Editor in Chief, before being appointed Editor in Chief in June 2020.
JÉRÔME CAZADIEU (France) After having obtained a Master’s Degree of Political Science and Law at University of Toulouse 2000 and having completed further cinema studies at the University of Paris III in the following year, Jérôme Cazadieu joined L’Equipe Magazine as Senior Reporter from 2002 to 2007. In 2007, he was appointed Head of the investigation unit. In 2011, Cazadieu became Head of news writing, producing several documentary series for L’Équipe channel and website. In 2014, he took the role of Editor-in-Chief of the Digital Division until 2015, working to implement the digital offer of L’Équipe group. Since 2015, Jérôme Cazadieu is Editor in Chief at L’Équipe Group, sitting in the Executive Committee and managing a team of over 340 people. During these years, he worked on the creation and implementation of innovative projects like the 100% digital brand L’Équipe Explore, a content platform that aims to enrich the brand’s content portfolio with unique and immersive formats.
JUAN IGNACIO GALLARDO (Spain) Editor in Chief of Marca since March 2016, he began his professional career at El Informativo de Leganés and Antena 3 Madrid. During his long career in Marca, a newspaper he joined in 1991, he has toured all sections of the newspaper and held the positions of chief of section (2001), editor in chief (2003) and deputy chief (2007). He has been directly responsible for sections such as Cierre, Editiones, Fútbol or Real Madrid and has coordinated throughout all these years various editorial and technological initiatives (some of them pioneers in Europe, such as sending information to mobiles). In charge of leading the New Projects area of the newspaper, he was in charge of Marca Plus, awarded two years in a row as Best Digital Sports Magazine in the World. He was vice president of the Spanish Association of the Sports Press (AEPD) for seven years, a position he left after being named editor in chief Marca
Distinguished by the Government with the Bronze Medal for Sports Merit. He has published a dozen sports-themed books, such as the biography Maradona, What planet do you come from?, The Best Anecdotes from Real Madrid, El Deporte Rey and Gallego & Rey, 1,000 things you should know about football and CR7 World Cups, the secrets of the machine (published in three continents) among others.
